Tips - Driving During Rain

Wet weather and stormy conditions can make driving dangerous and difficult. It is quite hard to see road signs, other vehicles, pedestrians, and the road itself. Nevertheless, as a smart and responsible motorist, you have to observe precautionary measures while driving under the rain.

When driving on a rainy day, slow down because it is challenging to stop or adjust gears. Slowing down helps you prevent dangerous skids and retain car control. Avoid splashing water on pedestrians and other vehicles by staying towards the middle lane. Pools of water tend to settle on the outside lanes. When driving through flooded roads or water puddles, slow down. At best, stop and check the depth of the water. If it is deeper than the bottom of your doors, find a detour. Maintain or increase the proper following distance, and do not follow trucks or buses very closely. The spray from their large tires can cover your windows and blur your vision. When you need to pass by them, do so quickly and securely. Be keen at brake lights in front of you. Avoid using brakes and acceleration, especially if your car has no anti-lock brakes. Always turn your headlights on even during daytime because light showers, gloomy weather, and foggy environment can decrease visibility. The headlights will make other drivers and pedestrians know your location. Make sure you have functional wipers. Prevent the mist from forming inside your car by turning up the heat and directing the airflow to your defrosters with the air-conditioner switch engaged. If you smoke, periodically clean your car windows to get rid of smoke residue. Cancel off-road trips to avoid landslides, deep mud puddles, and flooded roads. Whenever you can, do not drive during heavy thunderstorms because lightning flashes can temporarily blind and disorient you. Also, strong winds and heavy rains make driving hazardous. When the rain is so hard you cannot see vehicles at a safe distance, pull over and wait for the rain to subside. Whenever possible, stop at safe areas like a restaurant or inn. If you have no choice but the roadside, pull off to the farthest, safest side past the end of a guardrail, but keep your headlights and emergency flashers on. If the storm is likely to last several hours, call rescuers and your family back home.
