1. Wooden cupboards and drawers –- place camphor balls to absorb moisture and protect your clothes and other stuff inside. Put Neem tree leaves to ward off silverfish, a nuisance pest or bug that dwells inside bathrooms, kitchens, and bedrooms, especially during rainy season. Sprinkle small amount of cloves on clothes to drive away insects and pests.

2. Wooden flooring -– make it a point to free your wooden floors and surfaces from moisture. Wax or polish them well. Note that moisture and water can easily destroy or warp wood.

3. Carpets and rugs –- regularly vacuum clean carpets and rugs using cleaners to take away dirt and moisture, which seep into the fabric and cause musty odour. When not in use, roll and wrap them in polyethylene or synthetic resin sheets during the monsoon period.

4. Home ventilation –- be sure that your home has adequate ventilation, allowing fresh air to circulate. This will prevent humidity levels to spiral up causing general feeling of dampness.

5. Roof –- fix loose or replace missing roof tiles to prevent leaks, preferably when the rain has subsided. Check if there are cracks on the terrace floor and correct them. Apply water-proof coating after initial repairs to fill up cracks and fissures in the walls and terrace floor. Clean the mouth of drain pipes by removing natural debris like leaves and moss blocking the flow of rainwater.

6. Electrical fittings –- fix or replace all damage electrical cords as soon as possible. Hire a professional to do the work in case you are not adept at it. Consult with an electrician or city electricity firm about adding, fixing, or changing your electrical supply box. Prevent all forms of water seepage into the electricity room or generator house.
